Chester Races

Back to 'Things to see and do'

Chester Races are a great sporting and social  event. Chester Racecourse is right in the heart of the city – in fact, the land it’s on used to be the harbour in Roman times! You can still see where the boats used to tie up below the city walls.

The course is quite short – just over a mile – and is run anticlockwise. The short finishing straight sometimes upsets the form book – so make sure you do your research before you place your bets!

Overlooked by the mansions of Curzon Estate on the river cliffs to the south, it’s now the place to be seen when the Races are on. The city’s restaurants and bars are just a walk away when the races are over – so whether you’re spending your winnings or finding consolation, you’re bound to find somewhere to suit your mood!

But you don’t have to go into the city to find fine dining – the famous chef Paul Heathcote provides top-class fare at the Races.
